Starry Eyes Nierembergia • March Favorite

My Starry Eyes Nierembergia has been the little superstar of my March Garden. She has produced an abundance of blossoms that bring me smile whether I’m admiring her from the window or walking through the yard. I first learned about her from a Texas Master Gardener Instagram post, and I’m glad to have her now!

What I Love About Her

Beyond the fact that she is a delight to look at, I love how hardy she’s proven herself to be already! I planted her in the late summer last year —the heat testing her right away. Admittedly, she didn’t look so fantastic at first, but she was okay. Then the winter came. We got freezes and even a lovely snow. She sits right next to my Gardenia who barely tolerates the stronger freezes, so she did get some protection for these events. But she didn’t seem to bat an eye to this cold weather. She is hardy to Zone 7a though, so this shouldn’t have been a surprise.

Then we got closer to spring and she just came alive. And she is lovely! While much of my garden has been slow to wake up, she just sprang right awake. And I just adore her pretty little white flowers with a sweet hint of purple.

Given that she survived the late summer heat as a young little transplant, I feel pretty optimistic about how she’ll do this summer.
